Plum Creek Watershed Protection Plan
The Plum Creek Watershed is located in central Texas and is a 400 square mile area of land that drains water to Plum Creek. Plum Creek (Segment 1810) begins in Hays County north of Kyle, and continues south through Caldwell County until its confluence with the San Marcos River south of Luling. In 2004, Plum Creek was listed on the the state's 303(d) list of impaired waters for elevated bacteria levels and nutrient concerns. In 2005, the TSSWCB Wharton Regional Watershed Coordination Steering Committee (WCSC) selected the Plum Creek Watershed for WPP development. The project began in April 2006 with three public meetings to introduce the WPP and to engage stakeholders within the watershed in the process. As a result of these efforts, the Plum Creek Watershed Partnership was formed to help develop and implement the WPP.
In conjunction with the Plum Creek WPP efforts, Texas Watershed Stewards was piloted in the watershed as a means to educate the local stakeholders about their watershed, its impairments, potential management strategies to improve water quality, and community-driven watershed protection and management. The first TWS training was held in Kyle on December 4. Additional trainings are planned in Lockhart and Luling in the spring and summer.
